Bacteriostatic Water is a sterile, non-pyrogenic laboratory solvent containing 0.9% (9 mg/mL) of benzyl alcohol added as a bacteriostatic preservative. Unlike standard sterile solvents, the inclusion of benzyl alcohol inhibits bacterial growth, allowing for multiple withdrawals from a single vial via the rubber septum. It is the standard solubilising agent utilised in research settings for the reconstitution of lyophilised peptides and chemical compounds. As a solvent, it facilitates the dissociation of lyophilised peptide structures into a stable aqueous solution while maintaining sterility for extended periods (typically up to 28 days) post-reconstitution.
